SPORTERS STRIKE A GOOD TRACK

Stanthorpe Sporters hit the jackpot on Sunday. After several weeks of poor weather, golfers were greeted with clear skies, sunshine and somewhat drier fairways than they have seen for quite some time. It was such a rarity that some players had trouble adapting to the better conditions. There were a few score of 50-plus in the returns.

John Rawlings was not among those. He returned to the winner’s circle with the best nett score of the day – nett 23 good enough to take the prize. It was good to see John back on the course after a bit of a medical hiccup a short time ago.

Out came the cards to find a runner up when Dick Hilton and Max Hunter each finished with nett 29. The first draw was a lowly two and a seven gave Dick the lucky nod. Max collected the run-down prize. No surprise for the best gross of the day, Paul Armstrong lined up again after a gross 40 for the front nine.

There was only one pin shot on offer, and that was at the third hole. It took until the last group through o find a winner. Matt Waterworth played an excellent tee shot to win the ball on offer.

A reminder to all regular Sporters – this weekend is the Stanthorpe Club’s Open carnival – a two day event so there will be no Sporters this weekend. Several Sporters will be playing the Open, and they are wished all the best for the competition.

Sporters will be back in action the following week again the following Sunday will be at the usual time from 8am.

ADAMS BACKS UP WINNING PERFORMANCE

Conditions for the Stableford event in Stanthorpe on Saturday were clear and sunny. The day was sponsored by Dep’s Beautiful Nails and the club thanks her support. With only minimal rain failing in the days prior to the round the course has had a chance to begin to dry out with some run returning to the fairways, to the delight of many players.

The past week’s winner, Junior, Hamish Adam, backed up his win with another solid display. The previous week Hamish had to survive a countback however on Saturday his score of 43 points put him well clear of the field. His best score came on the back nine where he scored 24 points.

Matt Burgess had a round two over par finishing with 39 points and looked a likely winner but was forced to settle for the runner up prize.

The ladies’ event saw Lyn Ludlow return to the winner’s list. She scored 20 points on the back nine was very good and finished with a total of 36 for the round. She could have finished a couple better but for a pair of one pointers late in the round.

Two points further back with a score of 34 points was runner up Marie Cook. Her score could also have been slightly better. She had a little grouping of one pointers in the middle of the back nine.

Men’s runner up, Matt Burgess, had a field day with the minor prizes. He collected pro-pins at 1/10 and 5/14 and the birdies’ nest at hole one. Hamish Adam added the 9/18 pro-pin to his winnings and Andrew Burgess collected in the run down.

Santo Cavallaro won the Pin shot at three; Angelo Maugeri at 12 and Ivan Juriss at 17. The ladies’ pins went the way of Lorraine Evans at 12 and Marie Cook at 17. Lisa Stuart collected a rundown prize in the ladies event.

This weekend is the Stanthorpe Golf Club’s Open carnival. On Saturday the begins with a 4BBB Stableford. Saturday’s event is shot gun start and players are requested to register by 11.30 am to allow for a 12pm start.

Sunday the men will play a Single Stroke event and the ladies a Stableford. A time sheet is in operation. Once again players are required to register 20 minutes prior to their allocated tee time.

The Sponsors of the Open carnival again include Maddie’s Gift Gallery, City Golf Club and Tenterfield Golf Club.

SPRING WEATEHR EXTENDS TO WARWICK

The spring weather extended to Warwick last weekend where there was finally sunshine breaking through the clouds. Improved player numbers at the Warwick Golf club reflected the better conditions.

Twenty-five ladies returned cards in the rescheduled September Mid-Week Medal last

Wednesday (12/10). Eight players in Division on, seventeen in Division Two.

Maria Carey showed the handicapper still has work to do when she returned the day’s best score of 69 nett to win the RSL voucher in Division Two ahead of runner up Annice Payne (73 nett). Maria was playing off a handicap of 38 a year ago but has shown continual improvement throughout the year and is now down to 28 and falling steadily.

Mary Young was right on target in Division One. She returned 72 nett to win the winner’s voucher. Anna Cox was the runner up. Her score 73 nett. The rundown extended to 77 nett that allowed giving Judy Lester, Anne Lyons, Dian Macdonald, Majella Kahler, Tub Ingall and Jill Barnes to each receive a ball. The graded approaches were won by Dian Macdonald, and Maria Carey. Carole Brandon, Marg Adcock, Maria Carey, and Yvonne Pinington shared the Pro Pin.

The best putters on the rapidly improving greens were Judy Lester (29 putts) and Lyn McKillop (30 putts).

The ladies wish to sincerely thank their supporters the Warwick RSL. They have been loyal and generous supporters of the Warwick Women’s Golf Club for many years.

FINE AND WARM IN WARWICK

Saturday produced the best weather of the season to date and even had some players complaining about the heat.

A very successful Cancer Charity Day raised $1600 for prostate cancer care in Warwick. The field of 96 players played the event and gave generously in their competition fees and supported the raffles to help raise that amount.

In a rare turn of events one of the Ladies won the overall best score of the day. Lyn McKillop carded the winning score of 41pts, which included a wash, to beat the field home.

It was a fitting reward for Lyn who worked hard in the lead up to the event alongside women’s Captain Ros Darton. The pair busy organising the trophies and raffles which made the event so successful.

Daniel Bowles was the best man. His score 39pts while Janet Davis won the best women’s score with 38pts after a countback. Runner-up trophies were awarded to Vicki Bennett (38pts) and Peter Gribbin (37pts). Molly Scotney, Mary Young, Narelle Norris, Kath Devereux and Judy Lester all won balls in the rundown.

Lyn, Molly, Sam Hinze, Danielle Seibel, Mary, Narelle, and Marg Adcock won approach shots. /

The Club would like to acknowledge the generous sponsorship of Danny Lyons Sports Store, Rose City Meats and the sub-committees and members of the Warwick Golf Club for their individual and group contributions to the event.

Despite a very rough schedule to date, the finalists for the Single Handicap Matchplay honour board

event have finally been declared.

Jill Barnes will meet Yvonne Pinington in what should be a very tight tussle. The date is yet to be revealed but keep an eye out for the date when it is released.

A large group of ladies’ members, past and present enjoyed a very sociable Support-Our-Sponsors luncheon at Birdie’s Bar and Bistro during the week. The occasion also recognising the resignation of Marge Burley from the ladies’ fields. Marge has been a member of the Golf Club since 1977 and a tireless worker since she joined her first Committee in 1989. It appears Marge may be able to lay claim to having her name on more honour boards than any other member. At 90 years young she could still give most of players a run for their money.

The Ladies played a single red Stableford on Wednesday (19/10 )for a Coffee Club sponsored voucher, (results available next week).

Weather permitting, Ladies will play a single white 9/18 hole Stableford for the Warwick Sandstone trophy on Saturday (22/10) .

Unfortunately, rain has been forecast every day this week so keep your fingers crossed and watch your email.

Don’t forget, the Halloween Teams event scheduled for Saturday 29/10. It is, sure to be a fun day so get your team prepared and add to the spooky atmosphere.
