Sports shorts – bowls

The green at the Southern Cross Bowls club was buzzing with activity during the Open Fours Carnival last Sunday.

BUSY WEEK AT THE CROSS

The Southern Cross Bowls club held their monthly Turkey Triples on Wednesday (12/10). Conditions were a little breezy however the green ran beautifully following the excellent work done by Wayne Foster, Matt Shepherd and their helpers.

Matt Shepherd may have been able to provide some inside information on how the green would play to his team (which included Sue Butz and Ron Phillips from Tannymorel), the winners on the day. The runner’s up were team “Incognito” from the Cross.

Best and fairest, luckiest team in the competition drawn out of the hat were Penny, Barry Frame and Chairman Pat. Unfortunately for Sharon Watkins there were no prizes for touchers, as she managed to tickle the kitty 16 times. Julie Foster, Robyn Smith, Cathy Hankinson, Dave Scotney and Barry Frame all went home with spoils from the raffles.

On Saturday, players from the Condamine Sports Club rolled up for a “challenge” against the bowlers from the Cross.

Everyone had a great time, especially Steve Domjahn who was so excited he fell backwards off a seat and wedged himself against the fence. It was fortunate he was not hurt as help was slow to arrive because everyone was too busy laughing. The incident had people questioning whether it is normal for him to sit down on the job at the Condy? While he won the Play (or stay) of the day, the winners were Ray Cornell, John Erwin, Liam and Sophia Holland and Geoff Davis.

Gary Russell-Sharam, Cita Weier and Wayne Foster were the runner’s up. Gary was heard to comment early in the day, “He had a hard time understanding Val Gray’s Italian accent, until he worked out Val was Irish”. Got us thinking Gary might have a bit of Irish in him also.

the raffle winners were Dave Scotney, Sophia Holland, Ray Cornell, Al Thornton, Rob Francis and Steve Tyter.

All eyes turned to the action in the Club’s Open fours Carnival on Sunday. It was a pleasant mix of the right weather and the right crowd which included some unfamiliar faces from Ipswich and Drayton Clubs.

The first-round winners were Steve Ford, Carl Sutherland, Pat Gainey and Maree Ball. The team of Brian Black, Phil Wagner, Russell Bean and Ossie McPaul won the second round while Ron Philps, Cita Weier, Margaret Grayson and Wendy were the third round winners.

Craig Thurgate, Doug Christensen, Jim Rickard and Edwin Welsh finished in third place overall.

Filling second place in the overall standings was the team of, Gordon Assay, Mick O’Leary, Matt Shepherd and Peter Gunther.

Congratulations to the overall winners, the visiting crew from the Summit Bowls club, Frank Taylor, Elana Scott, Dale Callaghan and Zel Zamprogno.

Tim Wilson, Danny Hughes, Jools, Steve Ford, Merrylea Wilson, Liam Holland, Geoff Davis and Shirley Alcock all won prizes in the raffle while Peter Klowss and Steve Ford each had wins in the lucky numbers.

BOWLERS OUT OF HIBERNATION

Conditions at the Summit Bowls club last Saturday were perfect for Social Bowls and there was an excellent roll up at the Summit.

After several washed out games over recent weeks, the improved conditions played a hand in luring 20 bowlers out of hibernation and onto the green

With the greens playing very evenly there were a few very close games and two draws.

Steve O’Gorman and Rob Capelli scored a one shot win over Maree Ball and David Stibbard in the first of the games of two bowl pairs.

Great to see Steve, a newcomer on the green and he played very well.

In the second game of pairs Pam Moore and Jamie Zamprogno drew their game against Rod Crome and Frank Taylor. The score 17all.

Eddie Zanatta, Keith Mungall and Darren Stanley played a 17 all draw in their game against John Graham, Rod Newlands and John Fairley.

Mary Zanatta, Barry Murphy and Adrian Jackson had a comfortable 22-10 win over Sylean Fairley, Brian Brown and Carl Sutherland.

PROBABLES V POSSIBLES ; TOWN V COUNTRY

The sporting emphasis last week in Stanthorpe centred on the annual race meeting. Therefore, there were no cricket fixtures played on Saturday.

There was however a representative Possibles v Probables match played on Friday night. The teams were allocated as City v Country as much as possible, to bring a little spice to the match. Persistent drizzle did little to help proceedings. In fact, the conditions stymied the flow of the game. Although play continued it soon became clear that the pitch was deteriorating, and it was not going to be a fair encounter. As a result, the format was changed to T20 during the first innings.

The Mitchell and Davis Shield selectors were keen to see how some players performed under different circumstances and somewhat higher quality opposition. This resulted in a bit of diddling of the player setup.

Tom Garland was the standout performer of the match continuing the excellent form he showed in the opening round of the season.

After a little tweaking of teams Country had a win.

This week fixtures are back on track with RSL playing Wanderers and Souths and Valleys going head-to-head.

Conditions on Sheahan Oval remain an unknown. It is uncertain how the pitch will play or if the drainage work will hold up to the forecast of rain this week (if it arrives).

If once again there is only on field available, some hasty decisions will need to be made. There is a possibility two 35 over games could be played with the majority of the second game being played under lights. Captains and teams will be kept advised of any changes late in the week.
