Casey’s Cups floweth over

Casey O'Connor.

If you don’t mind late nights or early mornings the Rugby League World Cup is certainly providing some entertaining games. While there might be some blowout scores there is no doubting the entertainment value.

It is good to see some of our top ranked players returning to their family roots and playing for other countries. Take Luke Keary who lined up for Ireland over the weekend. The joy on his face when his side scored a 48-2 win over Jamacia was quite special.

I am sure before we get to the finals there will be more than one or two upsets.

If you are all footballed out of course the Men’s Cricket T20 World Cup starts next week.

The defending Champions the Australians looked very rusty and a bit shaky in several of their warm-up games and no doubt the Poms and India who both had our measure in a couple of games will be feeling pretty good about their chances.

Come the real thing I am sure you will see a vastly different performance from the Aussies. Pat Cummins has been anointed captain of the T20 side. Apparently, Dave Warner is still in purgatory for his Sandpapergate indiscretions and it looks unlikely that will end. Selectors however love him when it comes to batting Steve Smith is another who looks to be on the outer. Out of form maybe but you have to be pretty confident to overlook a batter of his talent.

Beats me. He’d be in my team.

Another week, another major race meeting – Damien Oliver lines up for ride no 20 in the 2022 Moonee Valley Cox Plate partnering Chris Waller’s import El Bodgeon. Both know a thing or two about winning Cox Plates so that will do me.

As we hurtle toward the Melbourne Cup – Happy punting this week.
