Alyssa Blanch is a rising star, as proven by her outstanding performance at this year’s Tanny Sports event.

The talented 12-year-old broke a record, made 14 years ago in 2008, at the Tanny Sports event on 7 October.

Reaching a height of 124cm, Alyssa broke the previous record of 121cm.

Alyssa attends Murray’s Bridge State School, midway between Warwick and Killarney.

She previously achieved the same height at a Southern Downs district competition.

Alyssa’s success is made all the sweeter by the path she’s walked to get there.

Multiple factors have stopped Alyssa from practicing for the past few years, with the pandemic hindering her ability to compete.

Murray’s Bridge State School’s gym mats were also damaged in the mice plague.

Melissa Pickering, the PE teacher at Murray’s Bridge, said it’s very exciting to see Alyssa break a record.

“We’ve had her since prep,“ Melissa said. “She’s been able to see all the older students go through and do well.“

Melissa said it’s been wonderful to see Alyssa gain success in athletics, and she’s proven a good role model for younger students.

“She’s very sporty, very kind, and very helpful with all the other kids.“

Of Alyssa’s win, Melissa noted that she’s “managed to do it without a lot of training“ as they only offer track training at Murray’s Bridge State School.

Melissa said Alyssa’s success is largely due to “raw talent and determination“.

“It’s very exciting for us.“

Next year Alyssa will attend Warwick State High School, where she’s excited not only for more competition but more training.

With that kind of raw talent, she’s sure to be one to watch.
