BARKER BETTER THAN PAR

Brendon Barker returned a score of nett 67 to win the men’s event in Saturday’s popular single stroke event for the Newley Family Memorial. Barker’s score bettering the club par score on the day. In a fine display Barker was two under on the front nine and a back nine of one over.

The annual Newley Family Memorial was first played as a tribute to Laurie Newley who was a greenkeeper at the club and a keen golfer in his time. The Stanthorpe Golf club thanks the Newley family for continuing the event and sponsoring the day.

On Saturday Lyle Bryant finished in second place after he also had a good round of nett 68. Like Barker, Bryant also had a good front nine but his back nine could have been better. His result was still good enough to see one shot disappear from his handicap.

Darrel Boekholt claimed the Men’s pin shot at three and David Burgess held 12. The 17th went unclaimed. Pro-pins went the way of Brendon Barker at 1/10, Michael O’Brien at 5/14 and Richard Reardon at 9/18.

The new computerised system is a work in progress but seems to be getting better. After an event members can now see where they are positioned in the competition. Who did better and who they out scored. It is also possible to view the winners and minor place getters and check if you are on the winner’s list.

This week’s Howard and Sons Canadian Foursomes match could be a bit tricky to set up, but captain Brad Silver will be doing his best to get on top of the technology. Worst case scenario, it could be back to the old score cards for the comp.

A recap for those who have forgotten how this event is played. It is a two person team event. Handicap is usually 3/8 of the combined handicaps.

At each hole, both players play a tee shot, then a decision has to be made as to which ball to play.

Once that is decided, the partner hits the second shot and alternate until the ball is in the hole. Record the number of hits on the card as the score on that hole.

It sounds more complicated than it is, and it is a whole lot of fun.

ARMSTRONG TAKES DAILY DOUBLE

Stanthorpe Sporters golfers were out and about on the back nine on Sunday morning and conditions were excellent. A warm spring day in Stanthorpe.

Sporters welcomed back Eric McLellan who has been away for a few months away. It did not take him long to find his groove and hit some fine shots in the latter part of his round.

Paul Armstrong had a great morning taking out the daily double – winning both the gross and nett events. Armstrong recorded a score of 37 stroke for the nine holes, the best on the day and after handicap deduction, his nett 21 could not be bettered. His score card revealed two bogies, one birdie and the pars for the remaining holes.

Margie Locke just one shot away from the winner to claim the runners up prize. Her score for the round, an excellent nett 22.

Stuart Rayner figured in the run down with nett 26. Stuart has been having such a good run lately a few of his playing partners think that his handicap needs to be reviewed. He is just hitting the ball really well of late.

There were two NTP’s on offer on the day. The par three 12th eluded all takers and no ball was presented to the field. Aaron Simmers had success at the longer 17th hole after he played one of his better tee shots and landed close to the hole. He missed the putt but settled for a par on the hole.

It was reported that Terry Byrnes also had a good tee shot that was just outside the distance for the NTP.

Sporters will be on the front nine this Sunday morning at the usual tee off time of 8am. As usual, there is an open invitation for all to come and join in the social competition.
