New logo celebrates milestone

AHEAD of Friday’s National Police Remembrance Day commemorations the Queensland Police Service has a new logo to celebrate the 150th anniversary of policing in Queensland.

The Queensland Police Force was officially established on January 1, 1864.
The first acting commissioner, Lieutenant David Seymour, then inherited 151 foot and mounted officers and 136 “native” police, including their white officers, who previously had been listed as members of the New South Wales police force.
“Since forming in 1864 the QPS has done an outstanding job of ensuring Queenslanders are safe,” Police Minister Jack Dempsey said.
“Acting Commissioner Seymour was appointed as Commissioner in July 1864 and from the moment he took office he began to shape the “Force” into a colony-wide body.
“He retired from his role as Commissioner in 1895 after 31 years of service. He is, to date, the longest serving Police Commissioner.”
Current commissioner Ian Stewart, said the logo would be proudly displayed at all events and activities in 2014 in celebration of the QPS sesquicentenary.
“As we approach a time of commemoration on National Police Remembrance Day it gives me great pleasure to officially launch the sesquicentenary logo,” Commissioner Stewart said.
“2014 will be a very special year for the Queensland Police Service while we commemorate and celebrate 150 years of policing in Queensland.
“I encourage all current and former members of the Queensland Police Service to be involved in the planned events as we celebrate 150 years of policing this great state,” Mr Dempsey said.
