FOOTBALL jumpers were swapped for suits on Saturday night as almost 150 people gathered at St Mary’s Hall to celebrate 100 years of Rugby League in Warwick.
Players old and current rubbed shoulders with stars of the game as the local rugby league fraternity came together to celebrate.
Event organiser Glen Whitton said former players came from throughout Queensland and NSW for the event which highlighted the region’s love for the sport and the depth of talent the area had produced over the years.
He said in the 100 years of league in the area (from 1914 through to 2014) there had been 17 clubs in the Warwick region.
As well as organising the dinner, organisers also named a “team of the century” which included 13 players and a couple of reserves. Glenn said that exercise highlighted the depth of talent from the region.
“Of the 13 players in the main team 10 had played for Australia and everyone had played for Queensland,” he said.
“Even a couple of the reserve had played for Australia.”
