Three decades of daffodils

TEN Eyewitness News reporter Kristina Costalos will show support for someone she knows this Daffodil Day 26 August as an official Cancer Council Queensland ambassador.
Cancer Council Queensland will celebrate the iconic fund-raiser during the entire month of August, with the official Daffodil Day 30-year anniversary falling on Friday.
Kristina urged all Queenslanders to show support for someone they know – through the Cancer Council fund-raiser this August.
“I am proud to be an official Queensland ambassador for Daffodil Day again this year – we can all make a difference to people diagnosed, and their family and friends,” Ms Costalos said.
“The theme this year is ‘for someone I know’ – we’re asking Queenslanders to show their support for someone they know affected by the disease.
“Cancer has personally touched my family – my grandma passed away from bowel cancer last year – and my aunty is currently recovering from a mastectomy after being diagnosed with breast cancer, so I know the impact a diagnosis can have and how much support is needed.
“Investing in cancer research, supporting Queenslanders who are diagnosed and ensuring their survival is imperative – and possible through initiatives like Daffodil Day.
“Getting involved is so easy – buy a pin or pen to show you care about Queenslanders affected by cancer, or donate and dedicate a daffodil on social media with the hashtag #daffodilday.
“It’s never been more important for all of us to do what we can to help Queenslanders affected – we can make a big difference with a little of our time and a few of our dollars.”
Cancer Council Queensland spokesperson Katie Clift said Queenslanders could also text to donate to the cause for the first time in 2016, and dedicate a daffodil in support of those affected.
“All Australians need to do is text HOPE to 1999 8877 and a $5/sms* donation will automatically be incorporated into their mobile bill,” Ms Clift said.
“A follow-up text message will enable Australians to personalise and share a daffodil dedication. Daffodil dedications will also be available via Facebook and on the Daffodil Day website.
“All funds raised during August, and on Daffodil Day, are invested in vital cancer research, prevention and education programs and patient support services in Queensland.”
