Bridges need names

What should the new Sandy Creek bridge be called? Council is looking for suggestions.

WHAT’S in a name? The Southern Downs Regional Council thinks there’s quite a lot actually and is calling on the community to suggest names for four new bridges recently constructed and opened in the region.
The four new bridges are located at: Mullins Road, Warwick; Bellinghams Road, Elbow Valley; Sandy Creek Road, Leslie and Lyndhurst Lane, Warwick.
Southern Downs Mayor Tracy Dobie said Council was keen to seek the community’s input to determine names for the new bridges.
“Last year Council named the new Berat-Forest Springs Road Bridge after the late Maureen Shearing, as a result of community suggestions because of Maureen’s connection to the area,” she said.
“Maureen was a keen advocate for the bridge to be replaced as well as for the replacement of the nearby Kital Road Bridge.
“Naming these new bridges is a visible way of recognising and commemorating those individuals who have contributed to the local area or the broader region.”
If you wish to submit a name suggestion for one of the bridges, please provide the following:
– Your name and contact details;
– The bridge location (e.g. Mullins Road, Warwick);
– Suggested name for the bridge; and
– A brief statement to support your suggestion outlining why the individual should be commemorated.
Written suggestions with the above details can be submitted online at Council’s ‘Have Your Say’ page; via email to mail@sdrc.qld.gov.au; posted to The Chief Executive Officer, Southern Downs Regional Council, PO Box 26, Warwick Qld 4370; or delivered to Council’s Community Contact Centres in Warwick and Stanthorpe, and must be received by Council by 5pm, Friday 30 September 2016.
Council will consider the community’s suggestions at its General Meeting on Wednesday, 26 October 2016. For further information about making a bridge name suggestion, please contact Council’s Engineering Services Team on 1300 MY SDRC (1300 697 372) or visit the website www.sdrc.qld.gov.au.
