SATURDAY’S Warwick junior soccer under-12/13 grand final between Clifton Peanut Trading and Iconic Constructions was almost as much of a nail-biter as their semi-final meeting a fortnight ago.
The morning grand final at Warwick’s Queens Park went into extra time with the scores at 3-all at full time, reminiscent of the semi which was decided by a gripping penalty shoot-out.
Clifton scored two goals early in the first extra time period on Saturday and Iconic were unable to check Clifton’s subsequent momentum, despite some spirited runs by their forwards and midfielders and some gritty defensive efforts.
Harry McMahon from the K and S Water Carting team was later named best and fairest in the under-12/13 age group at the club presentations.
Southern Downs Realty defeated Red Rooster 2-1 in the premier under-15/16 grade grand final, with Alice Cook from Southern Downs Realty named best-and-fairest for the season.
The Warwick Wolves Colts went down 3-1 to Wanderers in Toowoomba on Friday night, while Willowburn defeated the Wolves women’s team 3-0 on Sunday, also in Toowoomba.
A club raffle held to raise funds for much-loved Warwick Wolves Development Academy coaching director Tim Gaske, who has been battling a rare form of cancer, raised more than $3000 and was drawn during the junior presentations on Saturday afternoon.
The prize was a table for 10 worth around $1000 at the upcoming Warwick Cup Race Day and was provided courtesy of an anonymous donor.
