New life for Tenterfield shop fronts

RESTORATION of shop fronts in the Tenterfield town centre will be the only priority for projects funded this year under the Local Heritage Assistance Program.
Council is offering a new round of Local Heritage Grants for 2013-14.
The program was aimed at helping owners of historic buildings with the costs of restoration and maintenance.
Mayor Peter Petty said the heritage character of Tenterfield is unique and gives our community a strong identity and sense of place.
“A great deal of work has been done recently in consultation with the community on the Tenterfield Main Street Masterplan,” he said.
“To complement the proposed streetscape works, this year Council is going to prioritise its heritage grant programme to historic buildings in the town centre.”
A total grant fund of $25,500 will be available for distribution and Council will endeavour to support as many projects as possible.
Council’s Heritage Advisor, Deborah Wray, said at present there were several facades which could benefit from a new heritage paint scheme or from removal of modern cladding, windows, or non original alterations.
“When several owners carry out work on one area it has a collective impact and I look forward to what can be achieved this year,” she said.
Application forms may be obtained from Wednesday, 17 July, on Council’s website or from Council Offices at 247 Rouse Street, Tenterfield, open 8.30am to 4.30pm.
The closing time and date for applications is 4.30pm Tuesday, 13 August.
