Eight Mile claims two more lives

By JONATHON HOWARD

FRESH calls for a review of speed limits at the Eight Mile intersection have been made following the horrific deaths of two young Toowoomba residents on Monday.
The accident took place at 10.45am and involved a blue Toyota sedan and a fully loaded B-double flatbed truck.
Police have confirmed the victims as 20-year-old Toowoomba man Jaydon Adams and a 26-year-old Toowoomba woman who was yet to be identified at the time of print.
While the cause of the accident is still being investigated, it was believed that the truck travelling north collided with the side of the sedan which was possibly attempting to turn right and travel South towards Warwick.
The sedan was dragged about 80-100 metres from the intersection and downed a light pole before becoming wedged under the truck.
Emergency services used the Jaws of Life to cut the deceased from the twisted vehicle and it took another hour before authorities had the Cunningham Highway cleared.
Warwick Police Senior Sergeant Stewart Day confirmed the deaths of the male driver and a female passenger, both travelling in the sedan.
Snr Sgt Day said the occupants were deceased upon arrival but would not give any further details until family members were informed.
The male 54-year-old truck driver received no injuries and police said a breath test found he had no alcohol in his system.
The truck was registered with Victorian number plates.
Snr Sgt Day said police expected to use a mounted CCTV camera at the intersection, to assist with their investigation.
A string of accidents have occurred at the Eight Mile intersection including the tragic death in similar circumstances of a Warwick school teacher, Jane Ezzy, on 18 March, 2011.
The accident comes at a time of widespread speed limit reviews by the State Government.
Submissions to the speed limit review can be made via the website (www.tmr.qld.gov.au) until Friday, 6 September.
Police have also appealed for any witnesses who may have seen the accident occur to phone the Warwick Police station on (07) 4660 4444 or Police Link on 131 444.
