Chance to get fire ready

A GOLDEN opportunity to obtain real and practical advice about how to prepare for not only the coming bushfire season but the years ahead at the Eukey Hall on this Saturday, 24 August.

The Border Landcare Organic Group (BLOG) is organising an event to help rural and town property owners understand fire regimes and how to best protect their property.
Toowoomba Regional Training and Support Officer Ross Stacey will be giving the main presentation.
Mr Stacey will focus on how to develop a plan for your property’s protection, including how to prepare over days, months and years ahead.
The event will be held at the Eukey Hall, opposite the Eukey Fire Shed.
Members of the Eukey Rural Fire Brigade will be at the event to give advice, show their fire-fighting equipment and talk about their experiences of past fires in the district.
They will also explain why the Granite Belt is particularly prone to dangerous bushfires.
This local knowledge is invaluable in understanding fire habits in the area and most helpful, especially for residents who are new to the district and may not have had previous experience with fighting bushfires.
Eukey Fire Brigade First Officer David Entermann said there was a lot brigade officers know about fire behaviour and ways to reduce the risks in event of a wildfire.
“Vegetation management and choice of landscape planting can be really important. The aim is to create an enclave around you, thus reducing the intensity of fire close to your home,” he said.
The day is free and starts at 10am with morning tea. Presentations begin at 10.30am and will finish by about 1pm with a bring-and-share lunch.
Please take a plate of food to share, your own cup, etc. More information can be found at www.granitenet.com.au/groups/environment/blog
