Record cattle at yards

CATTLE numbers more than doubled to the highest levels since April 2012.
Overall quality was generally good, with large numbers off the last of the oats crops.
Young cattle experienced a mixed trend with only the very best of the light and medium weights receiving strong demand, while the remainder of the light and medium weights lost ground in price.
Medium weight yearling steers to feed averaged 7c to 15c cheaper however heavyweights to the trade averaged 7c/kg dearer.
Heavy grown steers and bullocks sold to a market 4c better and medium weight cows also experienced a dearer trend to gain 3c to 5c/kg.
Some light calves to restockers made to 199c with the remainder at 153c/kg. Vealer steers to restockers averaged 180c with the occasional sale to local butchers at 202c/kg. Vealer heifers to local and southern processors averaged close to 159c, while the better end sold to the local meat trade at 189c/kg.
Medium weight yearling steers to feed averaged from 166c to 170c with sales
to 176c/kg. Heavyweights to feed averaged 166c, while a fair sample to the trade improved 7c to average 172c with sales to 182c/kg. The best of the lightweight yearling heifers mostly sold around 150c/kg. Medium weights to the trade averaged 158c and sold to 175c and D muscle lines to feed averaged 129c/kg.
Heavy grown steers averaged 174c and sold to 183c, while a few bullocks averaged 176c/kg. Medium weight plain cows averaged 88c and 2 scores 110c, with sales to 116c/kg. Medium weight 4 scores averaged 128c, while good heavy cows made to
146c to average 132c/kg. Heavy bulls made to 167c/kg.
