Pet danger as snakes stir

By JONATHON HOWARD

SNAKES are on the move and the Warwick Animal Welfare Association is urging residents to take extra precautions with pets.
The sudden warm weather has meant snakes are stirring in burrows and are patrolling for food.
“Over the weekend the clinic treated three snake-bitten dogs,” a spokesperson for the Warwick Animal Welfare said.
“Snakes have numerous toxins in their venom. Some can cause flaccid paralysis of the limbs leading to paralysis and some cause red blood cell breakdown and haemorrhage.
“The clinical signs to look for in your pet include weakness, ataxia, paralysis, dilated pupils, tremors, salivation, vomiting and laboured breathing.”
Residents are advised to seek a veternarian immediately after an animal is bitten.
Alternatively residents can phone the Warwick Animal Welfare Association 0447 801 909.
