Matthews fires in small field

A smaller than normal field hit the Warwick Golf course at the weekend for the Men’s Single Stableford event sponsored by King Street Mechanical.

The poor conditions did little to deter Alan Matthews who returned the winning score of 37 points. Matthews has been playing well and recently partnered Don Stewart in the 4BBB handicap Matchplay. The pair qualified and progressed to the semi-final only to go down on the 20th hole.

Kris McLennan was the Stableford runner up. McLennan returned 36 points which represented two under off the stick – excellent golf in the windy conditions. There was a bit of a log jam on 36 points and McLennan was declared the runner up after a countback with Bruce Howells and Michael Hoskin. Clayton Frank and James Bradshaw both returned 35 points to complete the run down.

The NTP shots went to Josh Jensen (fifth), Evan Pfeffer ( seventh and 11th). Dave Speedy had success at the ninth and Jay Roberts won the 16th.

At the pro pin on the 13th Kris McLennan won four balls, Al Matthews three, Dave Speedy two. Wayne Walters who has only recently returned to the game after a break pocketed the final ball and is steadily returning to his good form of old.

Saturday BNW Accountants provide the trophy for a Single Stableford. On Sunday the Mixed Foursome Championships, an honour board event, over 36 holes will be played.

A reminder that the Warwick Open two-day event is scheduled for August 13 and 14.
