SOUTHERN Free Times readers have been warned to prepare for “disaster season”.
Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) is encouraging residents to plan now to increase their safety when floods occur.
QFES Commissioner Lee Johnson said residents need to be aware that flooding isn’t just caused by heavy rainfall.
He said history shown that floods can occur from run-off from rivers, dams and urban drainage.
“Flash flooding can occur within minutes of rainfall and can be the most dangerous,” Mr Johnson said.
“It’s important to have a plan for all types of flooding to protect life and property.”
Mr Johnson said residents should make a plan before disaster season began and decide in advance if they will leave or stay on their property should flooding occur.
“When a weather warning is issued, residents should immediately put their plan into action and keep listening to warnings,” he said.
“Stay indoors until you receive official advice that the danger has passed, and check on your neighbours following an event.
“Most importantly, under no circumstances should you walk, swim, cycle or drive through floodwater,” Mr Johnson said.
“Even a small amount of water flowing over a road is enough to sweep a car, or person, into danger.
“If it’s flooded, forget it.”
Pre-flooding preparation should include having an emergency kit with copies of important documents; warm clothing and closed-toe shoes; bottled water and non-perishable food and medical and sanitary items like toothpaste, a first aid kit and toilet paper.
“Make sure you’ve planned for possible evacuations and know what roads in your area will be cut if water rises,” Mr Johnson said.
“Consider what objects you may need to shift above the waterline and identify your local evacuation centre, or a friend or family member you can stay with until the trouble passes.”
