ALLORA’S water future will be assured by mid-2014 when the new 26km pipeline from Warwick is completed.
Construction began last week at the Browns Road crossing of Backwater Creek, near the Eight Mile intersection. The completed project will take water from the Freestone Reservoir to the current reservoir at Allora.
The creek crossing was chosen to install that section ahead of summer rains.
According to council engineer Tendekai Mapeza, Southern Downs Regional Council workers will lay 4350 six-metre lengths of pipe to complete the project.
Workers hope to lay 150m to 200m of pipe a day, burying it in a trench up to 1.5m deep, he said.
Mayor Peter Blundell said work is progressing well.
“This $5 million project will ensure the town has a reliable and high quality water supply,” he said.
“The design of the project ensures we have a usable service life for many years into the future.
“The SCRC water services team has begun work on the pipe construction at the Browns
Road crossing of Backwater Creek,” Cr Blundell said.
“The project will be completed in several stages but overall there is about 26km of water
main pipe from the Freestone Reservoir to the current reservoir at Allora.
“This is an important piece of infrastructure for the Allora community and I’m pleased to see project milestones are being reached,” he said.
